Writing Sample from Fourth Grade

Our fourth grade readers have been writing reflections on our last novel study. We read Each Little Bird that Sings by Deborah Wiley. Students had multiple writing assignments from which to choose. One of these choices was a 'Top 10' list for proper Jones behaviors. Here's a sample:

Top Ten Tips For First Rate Jones Behavior
       (Name with-held)



1. Report bullying to an adult
2. Be nice to all students, new or otherwise
3. Use CUBS rules
4. Pay attention in class
5. Do your work, and do it quietly
6. Follow classroom rules
7. Be quiet during announcements
8. Raise your hand instead of blurting out
9. Don’t brag about grades and/or test scores

10.Obey all the evil overlords teachers

This decoding activity had students working to figure out symbols of the Nurtz alphabet. Each symbol represents a letter in our alphabet. Recently, someone asked about lists of literature for students to consider. Here's a list that's organized by topic or genre. Check them out! There's some new and interesting titles! Bear Story from 5th Grade

Our fifth grade students have started working with Vocabulary Workshop - a great resource for new, exciting words. Working with the Antinori/Dunkel block, I'll be making extra writing assignments for AIG reading students. Our first story was about bears - appropriate with all the local sightings. I asked students to write their own bear story, here's a good one! MY BEAR STORY  (THIS IS COMPLETELY TRUE!) So one nice sunny Saturday, me and my mom had just had a little scuffle about who knows what. I was still annoyed so I blundered into the backseat of the solitary van since my dad,a veteran artist had already left for work.
