Nurtz to You!

What is it? What can it mean? All those weird symbols... Well, these are some examples of how third grade students have ended the story of Fat Cat. This decoding activity had students working to figure out symbols of the Nurtz alphabet. Each symbol represents a letter in our alphabet. The final activity was to finish the story - using the Nurtz alphabet! There was only one clue, btw, ask them about it!

Giftedness means so many things. Fourth and fifth grade ESG students have been thinking and reflecting on self-portraiture and what it might suggest about one. There will be more to share, as they're brightening up our big bulletin board.

John M. Pruett: I am John Pruett, and I am the product of public school teachers, literally and figuratively. Both my parents worked in and retired from public schools. I was raised on St. Simons Island and have an English degree from the College of Charleston. I was licensed to teach at UNC-Asheville and am a perpetual master’s candidate at WCU. I’ve taught for Asheville City Schools for twenty-something years. I’m fortunate to work with kids smarter than me - they just haven’t been around as long as I have. I am happily married with two beautiful and brilliant daughters. We feed and maintain two coal-black cats, Zeus and Shadow. Asheville has been a wonderful place for us. I love to cook, read, and make noise with guitars. When I grow up I want to be a film-maker or a saucier. Sauté a half of cup of minced shallots in olive oil. Cover them in lots of balsamic vinegar and on medium /low heat reduce to about 1/3 of the volume. Drizzle over grilled meat or vegetables.
