More Third Grade

Image
So, as you know, there are a number of different services now in place for third grade AIG. One of these groups, the Enrichment Study Group, read Megan McDonalds's Insects Are My Life .  In the story a young girl has an all-encompassing interest - insects. After reading, students discussed their own interests. They re-wrote the title of the book and illustrated their sentence. Here are some samples of their work. There are a bunch, so keep scrolling! I tried to cover names, so guess the student! Our ESG will move on to new work (think, dimensions!) after the break. Other groups have individual assignments that students will be working on after the break. I'll be conferencing with them about their work in the near future. It's been delightful to meet and work with these students. OH! Don't lose sight of my post from 3/25 about Career Day! Have a great spring break!

Our third grade AIG students have been working together in lots of different groups. Here is a shot of some students decoding a challenging story about Fat Cat.

Career Day

Rachel Herrick is the dynamite school counselor at Jones! One of her many plans for our students is to host a Career Day on April 9, 2015. You should consider being a presenter at this event! Here are some things to know: 15-20 minute rotating presentations Explaining how and why you chose your profession What school or training was necessary for your job? What academic skills do you use (public speaking, math, writing, etc.)? Maybe a hands-on activity such as:  have students  pet dogs, look at babies and broken bones on a mini ultrasound machine, sing along to songs, dance and wear various pieces of uniforms.  I encourage you to get the kids involved because that is how they truly learn and experience that profession! Please consider taking part! I can promise you it will be an interesting and fun time! Here's a link to get involved:    http://goo.gl/forms/l2sYwXNCxM Hope to see you there!

Reading and Writing

Our advance subject group for reading has completed Deborah Wiley's Each Little Bird that Sings . We have had some informative discussions about this work which have culminated with a menu of writing prompts. After spring break, we will choose some to publish and share. Here's a snap of our attendees on March 23.

Thinking Games

Image
Here are some snaps of some of our AIG study group students working with grant-funded thinking games. The games are fun, but they get challenging quickly! Here's a little secret: There are all sorts of problem-solving skills involved, but the real focus is having students build their ability to persevere at increasingly tough tasks!

Special Visitor

Image
Zeus, from the Harlem Globetrotters, visited Jones today. Students and faculty were abuzz! Zeus's presentation was awesome! He spoke about the history of the Globetrotters, including their pivotal role in desegregating professional basketball. More importantly, he gave specific actions to combat bullying.  What a great opportunity for Jones scholars! Ask your kids about this special visitor!
