Jones Open House Tonight

Here is a copy of an  overview of AIG services that I'll have at this evening's Open House. I'm happy to chat during the course of events. Enjoy your time at Ira B. Jones! Our classrooms have great successes to share with you!




ACADEMICALLY-INTELLECTUALLY GIFTED
Third Grade:
  • Asheville City Schools formally qualifies students for AIG services in third grade.
  • All ACS students are screened with input from their second grade teachers and an aptitude (or reasoning ability) measure given in November.
  • Many students also take an achievement test to identify strengths in reading and/or math.
  • The IBJ AIG Services Committee writes plans for students based on this data.

Fourth/Fifth:
Continued services including
  • Advanced Subject Grouping in Reading and Math
  • Thinking Groups based on Aptitude
  • Enrichment Study Groups

What is it? What can it mean? All those weird symbols... Well, these are some examples of how third grade students have ended the story of Fat Cat. This decoding activity had students working to figure out symbols of the Nurtz alphabet. Each symbol represents a letter in our alphabet. The final activity was to finish the story - using the Nurtz alphabet! There was only one clue, btw, ask them about it!

Third graders began our latest work with this single clue as to the code used for Fat Cat's story.  The story, however, was not complete until students used the code (with their own creativity and art work) to craft an ending. Recently, someone asked about lists of literature for students to consider. Here's a list that's organized by topic or genre. Check them out! There's some new and interesting titles! It's a long one!! ADVENTURE The Cay by Theodore Taylor. Blind American boy and an old West Indian native are stranded on a Caribbean island.1969. Hatchet by Gary Paulson.
