Fossils, Fossils, Fossils!

As you probably know if you've followed this blog, I've had the good fortune to team teach in fourth grade with the delightful Mrs. Tarantino over the last few weeks. We have now facilitated all fourth grade students in becoming paleontologists by observing and identifying fossils from the PCS Phosphate Mine in Aurora, NC. Here are some snaps of students discovering and carefully observing in their science notebooks.

What is it? What can it mean? All those weird symbols... Well, these are some examples of how third grade students have ended the story of Fat Cat. This decoding activity had students working to figure out symbols of the Nurtz alphabet. Each symbol represents a letter in our alphabet. The final activity was to finish the story - using the Nurtz alphabet! There was only one clue, btw, ask them about it!

Recently, someone asked about lists of literature for students to consider. Here's a list that's organized by topic or genre. Check them out! There's some new and interesting titles! Third graders began our latest work with this single clue as to the code used for Fat Cat's story.  The story, however, was not complete until students used the code (with their own creativity and art work) to craft an ending.
