Letters About Literature

Our fourth grade ASG in reading has been working on "Letters About Literature." Students discussed books that had made an impact on their lives and then wrote letters to the authors. This activity is actually a contest sponsored in part by the Library of Congress.

What were these books, you may ask?

It's always interesting for me to see the literature that looms large in kids lives!

What is it? What can it mean? All those weird symbols... Well, these are some examples of how third grade students have ended the story of Fat Cat. This decoding activity had students working to figure out symbols of the Nurtz alphabet. Each symbol represents a letter in our alphabet. The final activity was to finish the story - using the Nurtz alphabet! There was only one clue, btw, ask them about it!

Recently, someone asked about lists of literature for students to consider. Here's a list that's organized by topic or genre. Check them out! There's some new and interesting titles! This is a story about Fat Cat. Third graders began our latest work with this single clue as to the code used for Fat Cat's story.  The story, however, was not complete until students used the code (with their own creativity and art work) to craft an ending.
