Nurtz to You!

What is it? What can it mean? All those weird symbols... Well, these are some examples of how third grade students have ended the story of Fat Cat. This decoding activity had students working to figure out symbols of the Nurtz alphabet. Each symbol represents a letter in our alphabet. The final activity was to finish the story - using the Nurtz alphabet! There was only one clue, btw, ask them about it!

3rd Grade: Fat Cat

This is a story about Fat Cat. Third graders began our latest work with this single clue as to the code used for Fat Cat's story. The story, however, was not complete until students used the code (with their own creativity and art work) to craft an ending. Here are a couple of examples. Check 'em out!

Magnet School Info for Potential Kindergarteners

If you have children ready for kindergarten next year (or know someone who does!) here is some information in regard to the upcoming Magnet Schools Information sessions. Families invited to learn more about Asheville City Schools’ Five Magnet Elementary Schools and Preschool 1. Asheville City Schools will host Magnet School Information Nights on Tuesday, January 12 , from 6:30 - 8:00 PM at the ACS Central Office Board Room, 85 Mountain Street and on Tuesday, January 19 from 5:45-6:30 PM at the Asheville Preschool, 441 Haywood Road. The event will include the magnet school enrollment process, highlights of unique program and curriculum areas, a video tour featuring each school and interactive visits to information/resource stations. 2. John M. Pruett: I am John Pruett, and I am the product of public school teachers, literally and figuratively. Both my parents worked in and retired from public schools. I was raised on St. Simons Island and have an English degree from the College of Charleston. I was licensed to teach at UNC-Asheville and am a perpetual master’s candidate at WCU. I’ve taught for Asheville City Schools for twenty-something years. I’m fortunate to work with kids smarter than me - they just haven’t been around as long as I have. I am happily married with two beautiful and brilliant daughters. We feed and maintain two coal-black cats, Zeus and Shadow. Asheville has been a wonderful place for us. I love to cook, read, and make noise with guitars. When I grow up I want to be a film-maker or a saucier. Sauté a half of cup of minced shallots in olive oil. Cover them in lots of balsamic vinegar and on medium /low heat reduce to about 1/3 of the volume. Drizzle over grilled meat or vegetables.
