Third grade CogAT results were mailed to all families this week. The IBJ AIG Services Committee will meet in early January to begin the qualification process. With new qualification standards, students will continue to qualify based on available data.

Enrichment Study Groups

Both 4th and 5th grade ESG have been deeply involved with “Great Rescue” simulations. Although a couple of teams have completed their missions, we’ll have to wrap up after winter break

4:  Great Solar System Rescue
Teams collaborate to locate and save four space probes lost in the solar system.

5:  Great Ocean Rescue
Teams collaborate to locate and solve four ecological disasters around the world.

Ask your kids about this work! It can be contentious and challenging!

Advanced Subject Group Math

4:  Hands On Equations
This work uses math tools to make abstract algebra concrete. Students work through
seven self-paced lessons - with challenging word problems at the end! Work packets with a photo
and cover letter went home this week. We’ll move into small group problem solving after the break.

5:  “Lost” simulation, Noetic Math Contest, Compass Use, 3-D shape review
Lately we’ve taken time for the Noetic Math Contest, some work with compasses and shapes with Mrs. Brown, and our Lost simulation which we’ll have to wrap up after winter break. Congratulations again to our Noetic National Honor Roll member, Lily Foo - and all the kids brave enough to try!

Advanced Subject Group Reading

4:  Students completed and published journal entries from the main character of Crow Call by Lois Lowry. We’re piloting rubrics to review our work, so one class will see those. All student writing samples were sent home this week.

5:  Students read Richard Peck’s The Special Powers of Blossom Culp. Their writing prompt this time required a little more imagination as they rewrote a key scene from the perspective of another character. These will roll over to the New Year - creative writing takes time!

I hope everyone has a great break! It’s always my honor and pleasure to work with the students and families at Ira B. Jones Elementary!
