AIG Update

For your persistence in keeping up with this blog, here's a peek at the next AIG Update, that will go out next week. Thanks for tuning in!

ASGM (advanced subject group in math):

Math students have moved into a new simulation, Cliffbound! This math work focuses on rates and presents students with a stranded couple of hikers to be saved. Students have to work together to solve problems, and we have ‘answer rounds’ at the end of every assignment where not only answers but methods are reviewed!

These students have been working on a released copy of the Noetic Math Contest, an opportunity they’ll have later in the year. This work provides challenging work including multi-step problems and logic. We’ll start reviewing the more challenging problems in the coming week.
3
Students have played a couple of challenging math games. In 24, they must manipulate numbers to make an equation equalling, you guess it, 24. They also have worked on completing “It all adds up” puzzles, where the sums are given and students have to enter the proper addends. Harder than it sounds! We’ll move into work with dimensions next!

ASGR (advanced subject group in reading):

Students have completed the first three JGB stories. They focused on honesty. We’re currently taking a break to work on reading fluency with the help of Poems for Two Voices. We’re working on presentations now, so look for them on the blog soon.

4
These readers also completed the first three JGB stories. With a them of trust, students played the trust game (ask them about it) and then reflected on which characters would best play the game.  I’ll post some of their writing as we wrap up.

We’ve spent time reviewing do’s and don’ts of seminar learning - see blog post from 2/8. The introductory stories are fairly short, so we’ve read two and are having formal seminars for each. There are reflection sheets and my own participation maps I’ll share when we complete the first four stories!

ESG (enrichment study group):

Those dogged absences from snow, holidays, and workdays are eventually being made up.
SO look forward to the conclusion (and winning team!) from our simulation Great Ocean Rescue soon! In the meantime, some classes have begun to review primary documents from the Revolutionary War. The three we’ll review are all from women! Students will have ways to process each of three docs.

4
With the Great Solar System Rescue simulation at an end (congrats to Ms. Hollander’s class!) students have generated “wonder walls” of many questions they had about topics related to our work. These are noted on my blog from 2/7 and will be the starting point for student research. This inquiry is open-ended and will be a big part of coming weeks. I’m excited to see their work!

Students shared the book Insects are My Life and made our their versions reflecting the interests in their lives. As students complete them, I’ll share via the blog. We are now moving into some code work as students try to break a code and complete a story about Fat Cat. Ask your students about this interesting character!
