AIG Update 3/2017

Here's the AIG Update for this month. I'll email to everyone, as well. (BTW, I've tried using Smore to provide a fancier version, but I've been stymied by their interface with Google.)

AIG Update for March 2017

Math students have continued work on the simulation Cliffbound! This math work focuses on rates and presents students with a stranded couple of hikers to be saved. We’ve had some challenges with space and technology, but the students have largely completed this work. I’ll say the last chapter was not nearly as easy as they seemed to think!

These students have been working on Adrift!, a simulation where they have to work together to help save a lost sailor. There has been some review of coordinate pairs and measuring (both time and distance) using maps. Of the two chapters, the second seemed more a challenge! We’re wrapping up some homework assignments - don’t worry, I’ve given them class time!

These third graders have moved into work with geometry. To kick this off, we’ve had a couple of great discussions about dimensions, those we know and those we don’t! I was unaware of how many theoretical physicists we have in training! At any rate, we’ll be using 3D tools to measure 2D and 1D dimensions- while also reviewing symmetry and other concepts.

Hopefully you’ve seen some of the videos for reading fluency, i.e. student reading from Poems for Two Voices. I always enjoy them - such a flair for the dramatic! As students have been working in the classroom on multi-media presentations, we haven’t had much time in the last couple of weeks. However, I’m looking forward to moving into our last JGB unit - where the theme is ‘fitting in.’ It will be appropriate for rising middle school kids!

These students have been reading John Bellairs’ classic The House with a Clock in its Walls. This spooky story has been the focus of a lot of discussion (and a couple of writing prompts) already. We have collaboratively compiled a Slides presentation of mid-20th century allusions from the book. Kids are wrapping up the reading at greatly different rates, so in addition to our discussions and assessments, they’ll be devising games about the book. Some very cool ideas thus far!

The initial JGB introductory work is complete and was sent home last week. We’ve begun work with the first of the third grade materials in a story called The Banza.  We’ve followed the same read-respond-read-discuss-respond pattern, the culmination is a writing assignment reflected on the blog. Check it out!

Student work based on the first of three primary documents from the Revolutionary War (a poem:  Patriotic Poesy from 1775) is on the blog. Look for student recitation, while their own work reflects a modern adaptation. The second document, a broadside (ask them what it is!), is reflected in their own broadsides reflecting a BUNCH of different concerns. These will be up on the blog soon. Check them out while you and/or your kids are in DC!

The ‘Wonder Wall’ topics are beginning to come to fruition through the completion of inquiry-and- research based Google Slides presentations. These I’m posting on the blog with the title:  “Inquiry” followed by the student-specific question. The first two (Dark Energy and Pluto’s planet status) are already up. Students have a rubric to self-evaluate their work. I may weigh in, as well!

Look for some student reflections based on the book Insects Are My Life in the coming weeks. These students have also been working with thinking games which have proven challenging in lots of ways. Check out photos on the blog.

Almost all this ‘stuff’ is reflected in some way on my blog. Check it out:
