Kamishibai!

Kamishibai are a form of Japanese street theater popular in the early twentieth century. I shared one with fifth grade ESG students this year and then unleashed them to make their own. I found it a lot easier for students to use note cards - although original kamishibai would have been larger.

What is it? What can it mean? All those weird symbols... Well, these are some examples of how third grade students have ended the story of Fat Cat. This decoding activity had students working to figure out symbols of the Nurtz alphabet. Each symbol represents a letter in our alphabet. The final activity was to finish the story - using the Nurtz alphabet! There was only one clue, btw, ask them about it!

This is a story about Fat Cat. Third graders began our latest work with this single clue as to the code used for Fat Cat's story.  The story, however, was not complete until students used the code (with their own creativity and art work) to craft an ending. Magnet School Info for Potential Kindergarteners

If you have children ready for kindergarten next year (or know someone who does!) here is some information in regard to the upcoming Magnet Schools Information sessions.  Families invited to learn more about Asheville City Schools’ Five Magnet Elementary Schools and Preschool  1.        Asheville City Schools will host  Magnet School Information Nights on  Tuesday, January 12 , from  6:30 - 8:00 PM  at the ACS Central Office Board Room, 85 Mountain Street and on  Tuesday, January 19  from  5:45-6:30 PM  at the Asheville Preschool, 441 Haywood Road.  The event will include the magnet school enrollment process, highlights of unique program and curriculum areas, a video tour featuring each school and interactive visits to information/resource stations. 2.        Parents/guardians of children who will enter kindergarten on  July 20  (Hall Fletcher Elementary on a year-round schedule) or  August 29  (Traditional Calendar) are encouraged to attend as well as families new to the di
